Bone density measurement

Bone Density Measurement Department

Bone density measurement is the optimal test for the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis, measuring the content and density of metals, calcium and other minerals in the bones. Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease characterised by bones that are more fragile and more likely to break. The parts of the body that face the greatest risk of fracture due to progressive loss of bone mass are the hip and the spine.

Osteoporosis affects both sexes, but primarily women. More specifically, 45% of women over the age of 50 have reduced bone mass.
Osteoporosis, when diagnosed early, can be prevented or treated.

Doctors use bone density tests to:

  • determine bone density loss with
the objective of preventing bone fractures;
  • determine the level of risk for bone fracture;
  • verify a diagnosis of osteoporosis;
monitor the progression and therapeutic
outcomes of diagnosed osteoporotic bones;

The osteoporosis department of Medifirst clinics is equipped with the latest Horizon equipment from Hologic, thanks to which we are able to ensure:

  • Rapid measurement (one area per 10-15 seconds);
  • High accuracy and exceptional resolution;
  • Extremely low dose radiation. The amount
of radiation you are exposed
to is very low, much lower than that
emitted during a chest X-ray.
The most common method is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which is fast and painless. The patient lies on a special table and an arm passes over the body, emitting two X-ray beams with different energy levels. These x-rays measure the amount of calcium in the bones.
Bone density tests are easy, fast and painless and basically, no preparation is needed. The exam usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Results are available quickly, either in printed format or by email.

Consult with your referring doctor to review the test results and determine the best course of action for prevention or treatment.
