Digital Mammography

Digital mammography: the most advanced method of diagnosis

Digital mammography is the latest technique used for the early diagnosis of breast disease offering exceptional accuracy and clarity. This non-invasive radiological examination allows the visualisation of the morphology and structure of breast tissue, allowing the prompt identification of pathological changes in the early stages.

Prevention: the best treatment!

It is generally accepted that mammography is a woman’s main weapon against breast cancer as it ensures timely detection even at an early stage. This fact makes it essential and a mammogram should be carried out regularly by every woman, depending on her age and medical history.
The most important aspect of breast cancer treatment is prevention, which is achieved primarily via mammography. Research shows that the mortality rate of the disease can be reduced by 30% if women aged 40 and over undergo regular preventive mammography screening.
Our team is dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare services focused on your safety and comfort. We are committed to providing specialised diagnostic services which support prevention and promote the best care for your health.
At the Athinaiki General Clinic and Medifirst digital mammography laboratories, we use the latest generation digital mammograms to ensure the greatest image clarity and reliable diagnostic results. At the same time, we have invested in low-radiation digital mammographs by HOLOGIC for the maximum safety of our patients.

The following examinations and procedures are carried out by our departments:

  • Digital mammography: High-definition imaging for early diagnosis of breast cancer.
  • Tomosynthesis 3D digital mammography (only at the Athinaiki General Clinic). This is a three-dimensional breast imaging technology that allows us to capture very high-definition images from different angles in a single scan. These images are then analysed into thin, high-resolution slices which, all together, create a 3D image of the breast.
  • Wire localisation for lesion detection (only at Athinaiki General Clinic): Suspect lesions can be accurately located with the guidance of ultrasound imaging or mammography.

Tomosynthesis 3D digital mammography at Athinaiki General Clinic

Athinaiki General Clinic has installed the HOLOGIC USA 3D Tomosynthesis Digital Mammography System which is an high-quality technological system, proven through independent clinical studies to significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity in mammographic imaging.

Using the specific system achieves the following:

  • Ιncreased detection of true cancerous findings while reducing the number of false positive findings;
  • Α combination of 2D and 3D digital mammographic imaging gives more detailed and reliable results.

Scientifically proven benefits:

  • 40-65% increase in detection of invasive cancers
  • 27% increase in overall cancer detection (invasive and non-invasive)
  • 15% reduction in false positives

Preparation for the exam:

  • Exam date: Schedule the exam during the first week after your period, when your breasts will be less sensitive. You will be given more detailed information when you schedule your appointment.
  • Avoid using personal care products: On the day of the exam, avoid wearing deodorant, creams, powder or perfume under your arms and on your breasts, as this may affect the quality of the images.
  • Comfortable clothing: Wear clothing that is easy to remove. You will need to remove your top.
  • Medical history: Inform the doctor about any changes in your breasts and bring past exam images with you.

How digital mammography is performed:

  • The woman stands in front of a special mammography machine.
  • The technician places each breast between two flat surfaces (plates) that press on it gently but firmly. This is important to obtain clear images.
  • Usually two shots are taken of each breast from two different angles.
  • The procedure takes a few minutes. It may cause slight discomfort, but it is not painful.

Results are available within a very short time, delivered either in physical form or in electronic format. The results of digital mammography must be evaluated by a qualified clinician since an opinion based solely on a mammogram is not a substitute for clinical examination.

Be sure to discuss the results with your doctor, even if they appear to be normal, to get a complete picture of your condition and guidance on how often you should have the exams.
A breast surgeon may be the next specialist to see the results, especially if any abnormality is detected or if further tests are indicated, such as a breast ultrasound or biopsy.
Your breast health is our priority. With our advanced digital mammographs you can be assured of an accurate, comfortable, and safe examination. Our experienced and specialised staff will guide you with care and discretion, providing you with full support every step of the way.
