Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI Department

The MRI Department in Medifirst Maroussi provides comprehensive MRI services with modern equipment and specialist staff.
MRI is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create highly accurate images of organs and tissues, muscles, blood vessels and the skeletal system.
It is a safe option due to the absence of ionising radiation, , ideal for repeated diagnostic tests producing reliable results.

Our department offers an extensive range of MRI scans, including the following:

  • Musculoskeletal system
  • Bones
  • Soft tissue
  • Joints
  • Brain
  • Spinal column
  • Spinal cord
  • Viscerocranium
  • Orbital cavities
  • Orbital cavities
  • Thorax
  • Abdomen – Pelvis
  • Magnetic resonance mammography (Breast MRI)
  • Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the brain and neck

How do I prepare for an MRI/angiography procedure?

Most MRI scans do not require any preparation. There are some specialized MRI scans that have certain restrictions. You will be given detailed instructions when you schedule your appointment.
Because MRI uses powerful magnets, it is important to tell the doctor or technician about any metal objects in your body before the test (such as a pacemaker or orthopedic metal implants). It is recommended that you leave jewellery, watches or other valuables at home, otherwise you can store them in a locker at the clinic while you have your scan.
Some MRI scans require an intravenous contrast agent. Contrast material helps to make certain details clearer. If you have had an allergic reaction to MRI contrast in the past or have any other allergies whatsoever, please contact your doctor or the technician so that you are given the recommended anti-allergy preparation.

What happens during an MRI procedure?

ou lie down on a mobile table that slides into the opening of the machine. A radiographer will monitor you throughout the procedure from the control room.
During an MRI scan, the inner surface of the magnet produces repeated sounds and other noises. You will be given headphones which will allow you to communicate with the radiographer and you can choose music to listen to, which reduces focus on the noise.
The MRI procedure is painless, but may cause minor discomfort. The radiologist will take all possible measures to make you comfortable and will complete the procedure as quickly as possible.
An MRI scan can take from 15 minutes up to an hour. You need to remain still because movement can blur the images.
You can resume your normal activities immediately after the test.
All MEDIFIRST clinics use an integrated system for storing and managing imaging tests (the picture archiving and communication system or PACS). PACS means that each doctor at Medifirst clinics has access to exams or scans carried out at any of our clinics, so that a specific image can be compared with others that were taken in the past. This allows doctors to make more accurate, faster diagnoses.

Results are available within a very short time, delivered either in physical form or in electronic format.
