Ultrasound

Ultrasound Department

Ultrasonography is one of the primary diagnostic methods used today for the imaging of the human body. It is a simple, highly accurate and reliable method. The primary advantage is that it can provide real-time imaging of the body’s organs and blood flow (colour ultrasound). Ultrasound and triplex examinations are painless and harmless and do not use radiation.
The Athinaiki General Clinic and Medifirst ultrasound departments are staffed by highly-qualified medical, nursing and paramedical staff, dedicated to providing personalised and first-class care for each patient. State-of-the-art colour ultrasound devices and cutting-edge technologies (Philips AFFINITI 70 G, GE Healthcare LOGIQ P9 R4.5), ensure accurate results across a wide range of diagnostic tests and ultrasound-guided medical operations.
The departments provide support services for emergency cases and preventive screening as well as for surgical or pathological cases.

Our services include:

  • Superficial structure ultrasound: Εxaminations of the thyroid gland, breast, soft tissue, orbital socket and joints, with colour Doppler capability where needed.
  • Ultrasound of solid structures in the abdomen: Diagnosis of diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovaries.
  • Breast, liver and thyroid elastography: Τhis is a non-invasive method of evaluating tissue elasticity to detect pathological changes.
  • Colour-flow Doppler ultrasound (Triplex): Study of blood vessels, including carotid and vertebral arteries, abdominal aorta, arteries of the upper and lower extremities, etc.
  • Tissue sampling for diagnostic purposes like cytological testing or biopsy using ultrasound-guided procedures: FNAs of the thyroid, salivary gland and cervical? masses, core biopsies of the breast and soft tissue masses, etc.
Some types of ultrasound require special preparation. You will be given the appropriate details when you schedule your exam.

Preparation for an ultrasound depends on the type of examination. For example:

  • Upper abdomen ultrasound: usually requires fasting for 6 to 8 hours before the exam
  • Ultrasound of the lower abdomen (pelvic region): you need to drink 3-4 glasses of water and have a full bladder
  • Thyroid or soft tissue ultrasound: no preparation required
  • Transatrial ultrasound: requires an empty bladder
Please bring any relevant previous exam images with you to your appointment.
Results are available quickly, either in printed format or by email.
