Advanced Breast Care Centre
Preventive medical care has proven to be crucial in breast cancer treatment and early diagnosis remains the most effective approach for positive outcomes.
At our model breast centres, the triple assessment method is applied, which includes the following:
- Clinical breast examination with medical history recording and palpation;
- Breast imaging with digital mammography and breast ultrasound.
A combination of the aforementioned tests is the only proven effective method of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer, with an accurate diagnosis rate of 97-98%.
The advanced breast care centres at Medifirst and Athinaiki General Clinic are staffed by highly-skilled medical professionals from all the required specialties, with extensive technical expertise and high-level training in their fields, including:
- Breast surgeons
- Specialist breast radiologists
- Pathologists – Cytologists
- Oncologists and pathologists (only at Athinaiki General Clinic)
- Plastic surgeons (only at Athinaiki General Clinic)
- Specialised radiographers and nursing staff
Breast Imaging
In the field of breast imaging, the following examinations can be carried out:
- Digital Mammography: a simple, high-definition radiological examination, which allows for visualisation of the morphology and structure of the anatomical elements of the breast and its pathological changes. Digital mammography is the most modern and effective method for early diagnosis of breast cancer.
- Breast Ultrasound: this complements imaging and clinical examination, has the capacity to distinguish a solid mass from a simple cyst, and assesses whether any finding needs further investigation or monitoring.
- Tomosynthesis – Three-dimensional 3D mammography at Athinaiki General Clinic: this is the latest development of digital mammography, which provides even greater accuracy and sensitivity in breast imaging. It provides doctors with better and more reliable information with a lower radiation dose in a shorter time, reducing false positive or false negative findings, especially in dense and heterogeneous breasts.
- Breast MRI with contrast agent at Medifirst Marousi: it is performed following recommendation from a specialist for further investigation, and is recommended as a preventive measure, particularly for women with dense breast tissue or a familial medical history. It can be useful preoperatively for a more complete visualisation of the breasts and the axillary (underarm) area, as well as before the initiation of preoperative chemotherapy. It also facilitates the investigation of potential local recurrence of the disease and the monitoring of silicone implants.
Examinations available
The following examinations can be performed advanced breast care centres at Athinaiki General Clinic and Medifirst clinics, depending on each case:
- Recording the patient’s medical history and assessing the risk of developing breast cancer
- Clinical examination/Breast palpation
- Exam evaluation
- FNA (fine needle aspiration)
- Core biopsy
- Cytological examination of nipple discharge
- Triple assessment (complete breast examination with palpation, medical history recording, evaluation of tests, FNA)
At Athinaiki General Clinic, the following can also be performed:
- The full spectrum of breast surgical procedures (for breast malignancies as well as all benign breast diseases), modern oncoplastic surgery techniques for breast conservation, and oncoplastic mastectomies with immediate breast reconstruction in one surgical operation.
